Browsing on Haiku With Opera. PDF Print E-mail

Haiku user Fernando de Sousa, sent ICO an e-mail letting us know about his experiences with Haiku and its network usage. As you can see from the screenshots below (just follow the links), he's been browsing using ol' Opera for BeOS. Here's what he said about it:

"Using ifconfig and route commands and a /etc/resolv.conf file it's already possible to have some internet experience in Haiku as the system already has basic network support.

I think that the possibility of network in Haiku opens a lot of possibilities to the system especially because is so easy for running, testing, developing, hacking, tunning etc it in virtual machines. If you think that is good idea I would write a "how to" teaching how to have network running in Haiku."

So what do you think? A how-to would be useful for newcomers, no? Well done Fernando.

It'd be complete if there were a screenshot of browsing using Opera 3.62 with the page displayed being the posting of the story of "Browsing on Haiku with Opera." just to be complete, though showing HTTPS sites in use would be nice, too, since FireFox/SeaMonkey often messes that up on certain machines.

If you have a properly-working DHCP server, you shouldn't actually need to use ifconfig and route now...
need to ust ifconfig, route and resolve.

My router does DHCP with every OS except BeOS Zeta, or Haiku ... go figure. I set my ip address and netmask with ifconfig, my gateway with route, and my dns servers are in resolv.conf in /boot/beos/etc. and I go on-line ... http://216.110.210.251/fatelk/images.haikuserf.png

I need to use ifconfig to set the interface down then up again about every third page load or it stops working and Opera is not executable after a re-boot. Ah the pleasures of pre-alpha software.
