Page 1 of 8 Hi everyone and welcome to ICO's ZETA 1.2 (p)review. After yesterday's teaser, here's the full monty.ZETA 1.2 is the latest release from yellowTAB and has been in testing for some weeks now (and continues to be) by a group of beta testers. From version to version fixes and updates are done, and this piece is based on Beta 5. So go ahead, click below and keep reading.
I installed on my only computer at home, a laptop. It's an Acer Travelmate 4002 WLmi, for which the specs are:
Not much to say here, everything works out of the box. Only thing to mention is that for WiFi, I must press the hardware switch in the front of the laptop (switch is for all OSes of course).
Installation
Installation was the usual: agree to the EULA, then the partition app (which has been update) shows up, allowing the user to interact with their partitions, then the choosing of types of installation, Normal, Minimum and Custom. I'm happy to say that the number of apps has been reduced and this is more "visible to the naked eye" in the Games section, where the total is now 10, taking around 40MB. ![]() Games menu One problem with my laptop exists though, with my laptop's optical drive (and no else has ever reported this that is known). Installation takes around 90mns.. When it starts to copy the files, it goes fine up until about 22% and then the drives spins on and off between file copying. It only happens during installation but it's not an easy problem to solve, especially if the devs don't have local access to the machine, so no biggie. For everyone else, installation goes from 10 to 15mns, with Normal installation selected. After installation you're asked if you want to install Bootman and then the computer reboots.
First Boot
Upon first boot, ZETA sets up the filetypes, openssh keys, the usual. After the Tracker and Deskbar appear, a small window now pops up, giving the user 3 options: set up screen, read 1st steps (a pdf) and do nothing. As you can see from this screenshot, ZETA has new buttons. Not only that, but other widges have been updated as well as the tabs, and you can see in several screenshots. A nice touch in the screen prefs is our the small preview changes accordingly to the resolution you pick. One thing you notice upon the first boot is the deskbar, more precisely the new button in the deskbar. At first it was a bit of a "shock" since it was new, but it grows on you, and it has a nice 3D effect when you click on it, as you can see below. Also, it goes well with the tabs, same colors, same transition effect with the colors.
If you open a window, another new piece, the navigator icons. These have changed throughout the betas and they are now better than they were, but in my opinion, still need a bit of work for yT to get them "just right". Now, I'm not a graphics artists nor UI designer, this is just my opinion as an end-user, but that's how it looks to me. Also new is the TABview, now seen in many applications, most in fact (except for 3rd party apps of course), which you can for example see in the (also updated) About window. |
