yellowTAB Under Bankruptcy Protection. PDF Print E-mail

The rumours were true. After a couple of weeks of speculation, yellowTAB has just issued a statement declaring that they have filed for bankruptcy protection. They give a short explanation of what this means to the company, and the next three months will be critical to the survival of the company, as an agent, assigned by the government, will audit their books and accompany them through this process, trying to find ways out of this situation.

They also try to answer some of the questions ZETA users everywhere might have, such as "Will a new version of ZETA be published?" for which the answer is definitely Yes, as ZETA 1.2 (previewed here at ICO) should be out soon. Also, development work on ZETA will continue beyond 1.2 as will yT's collaboration with Haiku.

It's never easy for an alternative OS company to compete in a Microsoft dominated monopolistic market, especially a commercial OS company, and yellowTAB has been around for far longer than many expected them to be. These are tough times, let's hope they succeed in staying right where they are. If you've been holding out on buying ZETA, now it's the time to do it.

Intel Extreme drivers?

I was really hoping they would come through on their intent to share their Intel Extreme video driver code with the Haiku devs.

Hopefully this will still be a reality!

I think a lot of stuff added by YT to Dan0 to make it Zeta were crap(py).
Nevertheless I must find some cash to finally buy Zeta. It would be a shame if YT went bankrupt.
placed upon them, not filed

I think Yellowtab had bankruptcy protection placed upon them, not filed by them as the body of the acticle on ICO states.
bad news

They started at last to do things in more or less proper manner...too late?

I think the distinction between yT filing and having bankruptcy imposed from outside is an important one. If it was imposed on yT from the outside and they believe themselves healthy, then it's just a matter of proving it to the court. OTOH, if they themselves filed, it may indicate a more dire situation. Let's hope it's NOT too late. Like them or hate them, yT have gone a long way to reawakening the BeOS community and for that we can all be happy. If you haven't bought Zeta yet, now might be a good time.
It had to happen...

The fractioning of the post-Be efforts to recreate or extend BeOS caused this position. As a community we couldn't decide on the best way to go and our few devs worked on wildy different ways to resurrect BeOS. If we had concentrated on one method and put all our weight behind it we would all be booting version 2 right now!
Personally, I won't lose any sleep

I'm not that sad about this. From the begining YT was seperatist and selfish in the BeOS community -very un-beos like, acting more like Micro$oft. I have nothing against the followers and developers of Zeta, but perhaps we've come full circle now, and this time around it's Haiku alone that will carry on the BeOS legacy. This is the Defragmenting of the community where all the Developers and users will finally Be under one roof again!
Amen.
