Quite a few, new things are now in an alpha/beta stage for the next update of ZETA, one of them is the implementation of the latest stable version of SAMBA, v3.0.23. As you can see from the screenshot, ZETA is now "dancing" beautifully with Linux servers.

Click me...

If you have two computers in the house, a laptop and a desktop, perhaps running different operating systems, you will be interested in storing some of the files only in one place, and then access these files remotely with one of the computers. Or perhaps you, like me, have purchased yourself a NAS (Network Attached Storage) device. For these two cases, you would most likely be using SAMBA/CIFS.

IsComputerOn used a Lacie Mini Ethernet Disk (300 GB) to test the new SAMBA client. These devices are highly popular, as many have found them perfect for digital media such as photographs, music and video. If you have a laptop, you will soon find out that you need some extra storage space. NAS devices are convenient in that you can just plug them into your home network, mount them remotely from your computer and then use them like any other drive. If you are to move some really big files, you can choose if you want to do it over a faster USB 2.0 or over inbuilt 100 MB Ethernet connection.

The new SAMBA implementation for ZETA simply rocks, you will find that you have no problems moving or deleting files on the SMB share with the Tracker. You will have no problems with using your NAS disk as your Jukebox, keeping your whole music collection in one place, and stream from it either for the computer you have in your living room or in your home office. Users will also be able to stream their DVD backups with the VideoLAN client with ease, or play XVID videos with the default Mediaplayer! On the screenshot you are seeing the old CIFS client being used. It is about to retire, as a complete new graphical frontend is in progress.

Why would anyone want to use *that*, ugh

Implement ACPI then we'll be talking about what's good.

Mediaplayer and more

If you don't have anything constructive critism to come nutela, then keep your mouth shut!

People would be using the default mediaplayer in ZETA, cause it is the one included. Just as there was one in BeOS. And there will even be a default mediaplayer in Haiku.

Samba is needed for a lot of people, just as ACPI would be just as nice. But this article was simply not about ACPI.

Belive it or not nutela, there are people with more then one computer in their home or work environment.
stupid comment...

ACPI is cleary needed for laptop users, but for the rest of us, it's definitly not a "must have" feature !

As a laptop user, i would be pretty happy to have a full support of ACPI on Zeta, and also floating frequency of my Centrino, but network abilities are definitly way more important to me, are so for switchers...

I have to admit that I am not a huge fan of the default media play. Mainly because it opens two windows..one for audio and an other for video. I personally don't like that behaiver. But it is there and works well.

The Lacie Ethernet Disk is exactly the same model I have here (the 250 Gb version). With Zeta 1.2 it doesn't work (some folders are shown as empty, others with the contents of another one, I even found one with the content of the root of the disk!), it is nice to see that it'll work now.
Attributes

I saw no mention of whether or not attributes are maintained. Being the media OS and it's great MP3 capability, one would want their attributes maintained (albeit most MP3 info is kept in the tags now). Not just for music, but for things like photos as well. I wonder how they'll traverse this.

Of course no. The file system is handled by the server OS, not the client OS.

Like the one from Kancept keeps me awake you sleeping boneheads, yes I mean you Frank. Go figure for yourself why making another media player which is still no champion in any way (pun intended) is dumb, so who's stupid here huh? Way unpro if you ask me. What did you do before Zeta existed anyway?
Is anyone aware that VLC has got actually a streaming server inside? Samba is nice sure but I'm sick of all you Zeta fanboys who have they're eyes glued with marketing-honey. Where are the REAL improvements?
Back to the attributes; I once received a key file by mail from marcone Kancept, he's the author of (excellent) Soundplay btw, and it's attributes were zipped in another file. I believe it would be great when attributes would be preserved after FS transfer and simply re-added after transfer to BFS.
It'll be sure nice to have easy file sharing between BeOS systems and don't get back with ftp or BeShare because they are way-slow!

1) bfs to bfs attribute transfert need to be there.

2) any speed benchmark to compare transfert rate in other samba port (like beos to linux vs linux to linux)?
